In the name of God, the most gracious, the most merciful
The condition of the people of the Qur’an
Praise be to God very much, and may blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family. All his followers, as for what follows:
God Almighty described the condition of the believers in relation to His Noble Book, and He, Glory be to Him, said: (The believers are only those who, when God is mentioned, are fearful in their hearts, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith, and upon their Lord will come. And they ate, and the Almighty said: (When the verses of the Most Gracious are recited to them, they fall down in prostration and weeping), and the Almighty said: : (Allah has sent down the best of hadith, a book similar to one another, from which the skins of those who fear their Lord shiver, then their skins and hearts soften to remembrance. This is the guidance of God; He guides thereby whomsoever He wills, and whoever God leads astray - he has no guide.)
Ibn Masoud said: The bearer of the Qur’an should be known by his night when people are sleeping, by his day when people are breaking their fast, by his sadness when people are happy, by his crying when people are laughing, by his piety when people are mingling, by his silence when people are chatting, and by his humility when people are swaggering. He said: The bearer of the Qur’an should be weeping, sad, wise, and forbearing, and the bearer of the Qur’an should not be harsh, heedless, loud, shouting, or harsh.
Al-Hasan Al-Basri said: By God, today there is no servant who recites the Qur’an and believes in it except that his sadness increases, his joy decreases, his crying increases, his laughter decreases, his fatigue and work increase, and his rest and idleness decrease. Yahya bin Muadh said: O ignorant one, oh ignorant one, if I heard the squeak of pens on the preserved tablet writing your name when you mentioned your master, I would die with longing for your master.
Thabit Al-Banani said: I devoted myself to the Qur’an for twenty years and enjoyed it for twenty years.
Malik bin Dinar said: When the truthful ones are recited to them the verses of the Most Gracious, their hearts rejoice and long for what He has. Then he says: Listen to what the truthful one says from above his throne, then he begins the recitation.
When Nafi’ al-Madani, the reciter, used to speak, he would smell someone who had the scent of musk on him, so he was asked, “Do you apply perfume whenever you sit and read?” He said: Yesterday was not good, but I saw the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, reading on my mouth, and since that time I have smelled the scent of musk on my mouth.
Imam reciter Hamza al-Zayat said: I looked at the Qur’an until I feared my sight would go away.
Al-Dhahabi said: He was an imam who was an authority and upheld the Book of God, a humble worshiper, obedient to God, and extremely pious and unparalleled. He spends his days worshiping, teaching, and reciting, and some of his neighbors told him that he does not sleep at night and that they hear him reciting the Qur’an. He said: When Abu Jaafar, the reciter, washed the imam, they saw what was between his throat and his heart, like a piece of paper from the Qur’an, and those who were present had no doubt that it was the light of the Qur’an.
Al-Amash said: Yahya bin Wathab was one of the best people in reading, and I may have wanted to kiss his head because of his good reading. And when he finished his prayer, he stayed for as long as God willing. You would recognize in him the sadness of prayer, and if you saw him, you would say: This one has stood for reckoning.
Al-Fudayl bin Ayadh said: God is enough as a lover, and the Qur’an as a comforter, and death as a preacher. Take God as a friend and leave people aside.
The Sheikh of Islam said: Reading the Qur’an in the manner commanded in it gives the heart great faith, and increases it with certainty, reassurance, and healing. He would repeat Al-Fatiha after the dawn prayer until the sun rose.
You - Abdullah - must constantly insist on the Lord of the Worlds, so do not get tired of standing at the door even if you are expelled, and do not withhold your apology even if you are rejected. If the door is opened for those who are accepted without you, then attack the attack of the liars and enter like a parasite and extend your hand (and give alms to us).
Praise be to God first and last, and may God’s blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family. All his followers
